The Build

Project Tan Lines Started life as a 1994 Chevy C1500 2wd V6 Auto. Purchased by PSI Fall 2021 to build for new product development. The truck has been stripped down since for a full makeover. The entire Frame was blasted and coated in POR-15 to restore and protect from Rust. During this process the Front Coil buckets were cut in order to make room for the new Coil Over Conversion Kit From Arnie @ OBS Chevy Racing. This kit allows us to have fully adjustable upper control arms and coilovers for getting the front end dialed in for street or track use. While the Frame was stripped we mounted a First Generation Mustang EFI fuel tank with a 340LPH pump from Aeromotive in the place of the factory spare tire. We also took this time to replace some metal that was rusted out on the Cab mounts to get ready for the install of our solid Body mounts from OBS Chevy Racing.

For this truck we knew we wanted good handling and ride quality while getting the truck low to the ground. We Decided to go with a full rear subframe from a 2012 Camaro. with the help of our friends over at LOJ Conversions we 3D scanned the rear frame rails and had our prototype brackets built. The rear suspension is something totally RAD, and now you can purchase it from us here. We are currently running Ridetech HQ coilovers front and rear, with an 800 lb spring in the front and a 500 lb spring in the rear. The brackets include templates of the notch required and utilize factory frame holes in order to center the brackets. Our brackets use the factory mounting points and bushings on the Camaro subframe creating a bolt in Independent rear suspension option for the 88-98 OBS trucks.

Once we knew how we were going to get the truck to put the power to the ground, it was time to make some power! We started with a GEN IV 58X LS2 from a 2008 Trailblazer SS. The engine received a custom grind 231/243 .649/.649 cam front Texas Speed, Ported LS3 heads from HeadHunter Heads, Texas Speed Titan SR-3 intake manifold, 102mm LS3 throttle body, & a Holley 302-1 Oil Pan. All This Breathes easily through a set of Shoenfield Long tube Headers to a stainless X-Pipe and Magnaflow Mufflers. Using a Bellhousing adapter, Pressure plate and clutch from LOJ Conversions we used a VQ40DE 6 speed Manual Transmission from a Nissan Frontier. All this topped with our 90s themed paint job and Sticker Bombed intake lid made this engine stand out in the engine bay. All this is powered on a Concept version of our HAR-1037 Harness using an E38 ECM. This concept harness features Bulkhead connectors on the firewall to allow you to pull the engine with only disconnecting two plugs from the firewall for easier serviceability. Engine and transmission are mounted and fully adjustable thanks to Dirty Dingo Motorsports using their DD-2250C engine mounts and DD-OBS-TRANS-PC Adjustable Transmission Crossmember.

In order to keep the engine cool using the Factory OBS radiator we reached out to Dewitts Custom Radiator for a Electric Fan and found that there 32-SP480 Fan and Shroud is a Perfect Fit! Next Hurdle to cross would be mounting the Electronic pedal in the truck. With no luck finding a Bolt in option on the market for the OBS trucks we got to work and created the BRK-7398 Pedal Bracket Available now on our Website. This Bracket uses the factory pedal mounting holes to allow a direct bolt in option for the ACC-1007 Corvette Pedal most commonly used with GEN IV and GEN V engine swaps! The rest of the interior was then finished off with some new carpet, a set of Corbeau Race seats, and last but not least a Beautiful set of HDX-88C-PU Gauges From Dakota Digital. Fully Bolt in Harness bar is in the design and engineering stage and will be released at a later date.

What's the icing on the cake for a truck like this you may ask? The answer is a perfectly fit set of tires and wheels. We decided to go with some 19x12 Apex Racing SM-10 wheels on all 4 corners wrapped in 315/35/19 Falken Azenis RT660 Tires. This gives the truck the most amount of rubber on the ground as possible while leaving the wheel wells and bed floor completely stock. The goal is to not only use the truck for product development and advertising but also to race in autocross at the events we attend. In order to draw in attention we kept the original Tan exterior which determined the name #ProjectTanLines but adding some 90s flare to make it stand out. The truck has Teal, Pink, and Yellow accents all over like the pinstripe down the side giving that retro feel paired with the accent stripes on the wheel spokes. When looking for a bed met it was a no brainer that it needed to be something different, so we agreed Astro Turf was the correct answer.
